A tribute to Maya Angelou

I saw it still

Unable to move

Yet singing songs

Of nomadic roots

Can you tell me why it sings?

The rust etches its feathers

Tinges them into nightmare

Can you tell me why it sings?

The bars inscribe words of superiority

In its tiresome body

Other birds can soar

Grab freedom by the core

Meander through untouched skies

And watch daylight fall with virgin eyes

Oh, but why does the caged bird sing my dear?

Does he overlook his sorrows?

believes he’ll leave by the morrow?

Is it true that a caged bird can sing?

Unless its songs of autonomy

For one day, he knows

He’ll sing in sovereignty
